A locomotive air compressor is required to provide a constant supply of compressed air for the air braking system and air control devices. There are many models available in China, such as NPT5 air compressor, W-1.6/9 air compressor, W-1.6/9-1 air compressor, 3W-1.6/9 air compressor, 3W-0.8/9 air compressor, L2.4/10 screw air compressor, L2.6/10 screw air compressoretc.
The railway air compressors made in China are mostly air-cooled types. W-1.6/9-1 air compressor is W type, air cooled, two-stage, after cooling and three cylinders piston-type compressor. It is used on some Chinese locomotives which were exported abroad. It can operate continuously at an ambient temperature of not higher than 40℃ to supply compressed air required by auxiliary air devices such as locomotive air brake system, control air devices, sanding devices, wind horns, and driver’s cab windshield wipers, etc.
